Visitors at the 84th annual Portuguese Celebration on Sunday enjoyed a more than 700- year-old tradition for pioneering Portuguese families.
The celebration honors Queen Isabel of Portugal, who sold her jewelry during a time of drought and depression to help feed the poor.
The festivities, which took place at the Veterans Memorial Lions Hall in Cayucos, included sopas, a traditional Portuguese dish; a recitation of the Rosary; folk dancing; and the coronation of 2008 junior and senior queens.
The queens led a parade back to the veterans hall for a barbecue. This year’s senior queen is Marissa Hay of Morro Bay, and the junior queen is Holly Thomas of Cayucos.
