Concert a success

We wish to extend our gratitude to Therese Cron of Copeland Properties and Holly Burke of “taste” for making our first concert on the Terrace at Court Street such a success. Their willingness to help us create a new experience for the shoppers at Court Street (as well as our patrons) was extraordinary.

It was fun to watch shoppers walk up the stairs to the Terrace and watch as their jaws slowly dropped open as they experienced live opera music. It’s not all about the lady in the horns!

We estimated during the hour and a half concert, 100- plus people stopped to listen, which made us even happier. We love what we do, and we love it when we can share it.

Those residents of San Luis Obispo who stopped by this past Sunday had an opportunity to sample fine wines and arias from the classics. It is always a pleasure to see, hear and taste music and vino that matches San Luis Obispo’s beauty. Thanks to the assistance of “taste” and Copeland Properties, it seems that beautiful music and wonderful wines should be in the air and on the tongue for some time this summer.

McCain more of same

It’s clear that a McCain administration would be “more of the same.” The personal attack ad contending that Obama is not ready to lead the country because he is like vacuous pop idols is the latest example of bad judgment by McCain, revealing he is not above using Bush administration tactics.

It’s anything but straight talk. McCain disingenuously misinterpreted Obama, acting as if Obama pulled the race card (accused him of being a racist) in order to justify this pre-emptive mud sling.

McCain’s Rove-style, misleading ad insults the intelligence of the American people. Not the media’s, however. CNN, MSNBC, in fact all the big corporate network and cable news and political shows have aired McCain’s deceptive attack ad for him endlessly, without charge.

To make matters worse, the next day McCain had the gall to say you have to have a sense of humor about these things. You know, like the school yard bully who throws dirt in your face and then says, “Just kidding.”

When that didn’t pass the smell test, McCain actually said he was proud of the ad. I am sad and embarrassed for him. I would hope we deserve better.

In agreement for once

Over the years I have read Cal Thomas’ commentary for one reason: He has always been someone I could never agree with.

His neocon tirades made me feel good to still be liberal. That changed on Aug. 13 (“Mamma Mia” ). I had to completely agree with Cal on his take on the John Edwards affair.

I have always been an Edwards supporter. I felt his strategy on health care was the best. I was even more convinced of this when I listened to his wife Elizabeth give a speech on the subject explaining his views. And now once again we the people all lose because of “poor judgment.”

I’m sure this will not be the last boneheaded move a “narcissistic” politician will make. And surely Cal Thomas will be there to comment, and I’ll be forced to agree with him again. What a terrible way to start a day.

Bad intelligence

What should one think now about President Bush’s assessments of world leaders? Saddam Hussein was dismissed and destroyed as an “evil dictator.” At the same time, Bush declared Russian president Putin “very

straightforward and trustworthy.” Bush, affectionately, even gave him a nickname, “Pootie-Poot.” Not very gallant of “Pootie” to rub W’s nose in it by invading Georgia while sitting next to Bush in the Olympic stands on international television in front of a billion people. Thankfully, president pro-tem John McCain provided cover with his Alexander Haig imitation, “I’m in charge here.” It’s just lucky for Russia that it isn’t a patsy like Grenada or Iraq(!).

Otherwise, this latest neocon chickenhawk administration would be all over them.

Instead, they will next provoke Russia by placing missiles in Poland. I’m sure the Georgia blame will fall once more on bad intelligence.

Here is a sign of bad intelligence: Voting for candidates with an (R) next to their names.

On marketing Paso

A fter reading your article reporting Paso Robles’ $400,000 proposed funding for “marketing,” I have to question if some of these funds could be better put to use.

Of the $400,000 being requested, $250,000 will be supporting business and agricultural interests (e. g., the Chamber of Commerce, the Main Street Association and the Wine Country Alliance).

I thought that business and agricultural associations and their interests are funded by their members. Are we now planning to shift this burden to the citizens of Paso Robles?

I realize that $250,000 may not be a great deal of money, but could this funding be better used to offset some of the cost impacts of our “water project” on needy citizens and/or organizations.

Would it be fair to say that “Authentic Californians” support those who stand and take action to minimize the impacts of government on citizens least able to sustain the financial burden?

Those amazing dunes

Three of us recently spent a long weekend in your area: We stayed in Pismo Beach, went to San Luis Obispo for lunch and went shopping in Solvang. However, the absolute highlight of my trip was a long ride on the dunes in Oceano at sunset.

I felt like a wide-eyed child enjoying the experience of the beautiful stretch of beach and dunes. The family fun that I saw and smiles on everyone’s faces in the glow of the sunset was a joy. People actually waved to us as though we were their friends, and at that moment, we were all friends.

Your dunes are a God-given phenomenon, and I am so happy to see that they don’t just sit there to be admired. They are for the enjoyment of humans. If I were able, I would go there every day.

I’m 56 and probably won’t get the opportunity to enjoy this again. It was important that I let you know what a treasure it is to be able to add my extraordinary experience in your dunes to my “bucket list.”

Thanks for the hospitality.

Thanks to Osos Scouts

A sincere thank you to some amazing young people of Los Osos-Baywood Park.

Without any fanfare, Cub Scout Pack 214 and Boy Scout Troop 214 have collected more than 1,100 pounds of food for People Helping People’s weekly food distribution program. We are particularly blessed by the efforts of these fine young people, their leaders and the generous people who support their missions. The volunteers at People Helping People and the beneficiaries of the food distribution program sincerely thank you all.

This February, Cub Scout Pack 214’s Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelow Cubs, lead by Cub Master Jeff Cazier, visited local homes leaving an empty grocery bag with a letter explaining their mission. When the Cubs returned the next day, they collected an amazing 800 pounds of food.

In May, Boy Scout Troop 214, lead by Scout Master Karl Davis, went door-to-door and manned donation barrels at Ralph’s market.

On May 22, Scout mom Ellen Carroll and her son, Scout Justin, delivered more than 300 pounds of food to People Helping People’s storage shed.

People Helping People is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization whose activities include lending medical equipment, distributing donated food and scheduling appointments for seniors in need of legal, tax and renter’s assistance.

Our office is open 9 a. m. to 1 p. m. at South Bay Community Center. For more information, call 528-2626.
